What is difference Between isolator and Circuit breaker ?

Circuit Breaker

1. Electrical circuit breaker having electromechanical switch and relay in one box.

2. Circuit breakers are operated automatically through the relay and manually by On-Off switch from panel TNC or remote box.

3. Circuit breaker is a protection device that disconnects the load in case of a short circuit or overload condition.

4. MCB (Miniature circuit breaker), ACB( Air circuit breaker), OCB(oil circuit breaker), SF6( Sulfur Hexafluoride circuit breaker) all are types of the circuit breaker.

5. Circuit breaker is an on load and offload device it's operated if the power supply is off or on.

6. During On load conditions, the circuit breaker has a very high withstood capacity.

7.Thermal capability of the circuit breaker is very high.

8. circuit breaker has main and arcing contacts.

9. circuit can not remove the trap charges from it.

10. circuit breaker uses air, gas, oil, or vacuum as interrupting medium.

11. there are chances of overvoltages during switching operation in the case of the circuit breaker.

12. Earth switches are not used in case of the circuit breaker.

13. Circuit breaker can interrupt normal as well very high short circuit current during a fault condition.

14. Circuit breaker can be opened in case of no current or in case of very high current.

Isolator

1. Isolators are simple mechanical switches.

2. Isolators are operated manually only.

3. Isolators are one type of mechanical switch and provide only Isolation functions only.

4. Isolator is only isolating device and used only for disconnecting electrical power in off condition only.

5. Pantograph Isolator, Knee isolator, Double break isolator, horizontal break isolator, etc are types of the isolator.

6.Isolator is only an offload device and it can be operated only in case of the load is off condition.

7. Isolator has a very low withstood capacity as compared to a circuit breaker.

8. Thermal Stability of the isolator is very low.

9. Isolator can remove the trap charges

10. Isolator does not require any isolating medium.

11. Isolator has not any overvoltages because it is used only in offload conditions.

12. In an Isolator single or double earth switches are used.

13. Isolator can not interrupt current. it can only isolate the circuit.

14. Isolator can not be opened during the current flowing through it. The isolator should be opened after opening the circuit breaker.
